Philosophical & Speaking Irish…

It’s a great pity that the petition against the ill-planned and ultra vires ELB policy on EHE, which received over 3,000 signatures to date, was refused by the Education Minister of NI. Addressed to each board, and also to Mr O’Dowd himself, its rebuff speaks volumes of how much the opinions of Home Educators and those supporting HE are valued.

https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/the-northern-ireland-education-and-library-boards-and-the-minister-for-education-we-ask-you-to-ensure-that-the-education-and-library-boards-policy-on-home-education-accurately-reflects-their-legal-duties-and-powers-and-respects-the-parent-s-duty-to-p

Philosophical…

423937_4616091809303_2112500290_n(image: H downloaded an image from internet, chopped it, added ink splashes and the quotation, 2012)

.

Heading to bed I called in to say ‘goodnight’ to my teen and a few hours later I got to bed after a philosophical discussion.

.

How do we understand the existence of life with/without a soul? How can we prove what a human being ‘is’? If a  human being were to exist in a white cell devoid of anything else what would they do first? What is the most basic function of a human being?

.

We spent time talking about the driving need to continue our existence, the inherent desire to learn and explore that is within each human being, the creation of androids, science fiction literature and films, the difference in instinct between animals and humans (after Shadow placed his paws and snout upon H’s leg), the need for human interaction even within the most self-sufficient human, technology, the present & the future…

.

My brain felt tired yet I believed H’s brain was still whizzing, information gathering whilst surfing along neural pathways and creating new thoughts. Instead of a single bulb glowing above his head was a faceted mirror ball lit from within, spinning, reflecting its kaleidoscopic light show around him. Although a fanciful description it’s what I see when I watch H think  and ponder and wonder and voice. It’s magical….

.

.

Speaking Irish…

.

An Fáinne

(image: http://www.gaelport.com)

.

H is learning to speak Irish, a decision all his own🙂

.

He discovered that both Uncle T and Aunt K have a fáinne (circle) pin signifying an ability and choice to speak the language when possible. He listened to some of the phrases I still have since doing the language at school (apparently when I use to say ‘oscail an fhuinneog – open the window’ – he thought I was talking about egg nog). And he showed me some of the sites online he’d been trying out:

http://www.fluentin3months.com/irish-language/

http://www.bbc.co.uk/irish/features/8/gaeilge/

http://talkirish.com/ (he chose this one for its simplicity)

.

‘Set me a test mum’ from the lad who had been unable to cope with any tests 18 months ago (and a fast ‘brush-up’ on my meagre Irish). Learning it’s easier to read a new language than translate it from English. Discovering the differences between reading Irish and speaking Irish. Discussing how thinking in a new language differs from translating before speaking and how learning the language gives insight into a culture. Finding out how pronunciation varies across Ireland. Chatting about his grandparents who lived in Donegal…

Card & Mice in the Kitchen…

2014-05-18 15.49.362014-05-18 16.09.36

.

The graphics card was finally purchased, H putting his allowance aside (plus a little donation) to over the cost. It was time to fit it into H’s PC, a Vibox, factory built and probably not that upgrade-friendly, but after about 2 hours we managed it….

.

– Down to the kitchen with it where the work surfaces are higher (H is a tall lad) and the light is brighter, the kitchen would become the ‘upgrade hub’…

– Youtube installation vid, printed instructions and common sense. There was the screw from hell that refused to budge. We tried every screwdriver we had before success…

– The old card came out and was dusted with paintbrushes, stored for future use or swapping…

– At last with a lot of persuasion the new card was attached to the mother board…

.

Baited breath until it was installed, laughingly jesting that it might explode before us…then the sound of Chinese New Year, complete with firecrackers…sitting staring at it…in horror…

.

Next step was a heftier power source as the previous one had got blitzed…an online purchase, the best that the budget could buy…back to the upgrade hub, out with old and in with the new…

.

Okay…switch her on Bones…the light was on but no one was at home…back to the upgrade hub…laptop beside us…step by step instructions to work out what was the problem…H reckoned either the motherboard or the CPU was damaged…cloud of despair…we agreed help was required…

.

For the next 10 days H used the laptop (while I held onto a tenuous link to fb through my smartphone)…until we waited for ‘IT Guy’ to have a look…it’s good news for IT guys that there’s so much work about but for us that meant waiting at the bottom of the list…

.

A frantic plea via fb for somewhere in the area that would fix the PC…tried out a place, looked fine, friendly, no charge until they knew what was wrong…H and I left his baby in and returned home…the next day we’d know the diagnosis…

.

A new motherboard was needed, a price was given – it would buy H two motherboards online but we went ahead hoping it would be fixed expertly and quickly…on the 4th day we picked it up, paid the fee, took it home and H switched it on…nothing happened bar it started to boot but was unable to complete…it wasn’t fixed…

.

Many phonecalls, feeling let down, telling them to come and pick it up, waiting, phoning, trusting that they knew what they were doing, and finally it was delivered…H and I explained to the guy he was not leaving it with us until we saw it working…he turned out to be quite nice, waited until H was satisfied and apologised for all the hassle…sometimes that’s all you need to hear…

.

It’s working, there are a few minor glitches – the headphones aren’t working as sensitively as they were, the PC doesn’t feel as smooth as it did with its first motherboard…it’s satisfactory…it works…we realised that our idea of it being ‘fixed’ differed from that of others…

.

H and I have had a chat about upgrading his PC…he has my support to continue in a month or two…only by doing will he learn how it works…but for me the sound of firecrackers will always be the sound of the First Upgrade…

(since writing this H has upgraded the Hard Drive and added a Solid State Drive…all calm…)

Mice in the Kitchen…

.

400px-ElvesShoemaker-Crane1886

(illustration from Lucy Crane’s 1886 edition)

.

Remember the story of the Elves and the Shoemaker? Ever since I read it as a child from my copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales I have longed to wake each morning to find my chores have been done by helpful fairyfolk. Instead I find these days evidence of mice in the kitchen…crumbs on the worksurfaces and on the tabletop. But as there’s also cutlery, used and lying in the sink, plus torn wrappers off noodle packets or pizza boxes I realise there are neither elves nor mice…unless they are 6′ tall and red haired.

.

I am glad to see my teen has embraced the kitchen even in the early hours of the morning…perhaps I’ll ‘strew’ a cookbook on the kitchen table…

Juicer & DIY…

.

170px-Gluehlampe_01_KMJ

How does a US homeschooler change a lightbulb?

First, mom checks three books on electricity out of the library, then the kids make models of light bulbs, read a biography of Thomas Edison and do a skit based on his life.

Next, everyone studies the history of lighting methods, wrapping up with dipping their own candles.

Next, everyone takes a trip to the store where they compare types of light bulbs as well as prices and figure out how much change they’ll get if they buy two bulbs for $1.99 and pay with a five dollar bill.

On the way home, a discussion develops over the history of money and also Abraham Lincoln, as his picture is on the five dollar bill.

Finally, after building a homemade ladder out of branches dragged from the woods, the light bulb is installed.

H’s juice recipe:

2 x pears

1 x carrot

1/3 x beetroot

nugget of ginger

The Basics as told by TWOHP http://twohp2few.wordpress.com/tag/league-of-legends-explained/

– Within Summoner’s Rift…

– Play bottom, middle, top lanes and jungle…

– Defeat the outer turret, inner turret, inhibitor turret, inhibitor in same lane, nexus turret which leads to the NEXUS….DESTROY the enemy’s nexus…mhua ha ha…

– Spawn super minions, kill minions, last hit minions (1 hit, 1 kill, loadsa money to spend in the shop run by the old man with a long beard)…

– Fight neutral creeps including Blue Golom, Red Lizard, Dragon…

.

So what’s so good about LOL?

When H plays it’s about hanging out online with friends but it’s not just for entertainment. It’s about being part of a team (sometimes leading that team), a little map reading, moment to moment decision-making, prediction, and hell bent on striving to achieve success.

He doesn’t play the long hours needed to become a pro – ‘In Korea, LoL pros practice for 10-13 hours a day, every day. In America, it’s a little bit less than that, but they still play a lot‘. http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/01/the-summoners-guidebook-divorcing-skill-from-teaching-skills-i/

He has reached level 30 and in the last online league reached Bronze IV though the Elo rating (adapted from the rating system of chess) is hard to maintain as it can drop due to game losses. http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Elo_rating_system

Interesting that LOL players are recognised as pro-athletes in the US🙂                                     http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-07-15-league-of-legends-players-recognised-as-pro-athletes-in-the-u-s

Kitchen Design…

Sad to see the old fitted units go. They were petrol blue stained wood with a dusty pink stoneware tiled worktop. Now we’re looking at freestanding Ikea units, metal and black. H likes the move from ‘country’ to ‘modern’ and picked the new taps…

2013-11-21 11.37.03.

Took some time to sort out the sink support – we recycled our old Belfast sink – but friend Sheela made us one out of the good wood taken from the previous kitchen. Next step is picking colours to paint – H suggested we paint the floor so that should be fun…

One of the first things H and I did after deregistration from school was to sit down and have a chat about what we both expected from home education. In Jan’13 I had some very definite ideas about how I’d home educate – I visualised workbooks, visits to museums & galleries, timetables & structure…but in the following 6 months de-schooling period I learned how to listen to H’s needs rather than enforce my preconceptions.

H and I also compared learning styles as indicated from questionnaires by Vark and Honey & Munford…we had to start somewhere and as completing these Qs were the first thing I’d done on a training course it was a starting point…
